Year 10 RS group visited the United Synagogue, Sheffield

On Tuesday 9th June the Year 10 RS group visited the United Synagogue, Sheffield for a tour by Rabbi Yonosan Golomb. We were told the story of Moses whilst the special 'Sheffield Steel Burning Bush' was lit – the steel having been directly donated to the Synagogue. We then moved through to a room with a wall built entirely from stone imported from Jerusalem. On this wall was a map showing how Jews from all over the world make up the Sheffield Synagogue congregation. We then got to visit the Synagogue itself, being shown where the men and women sit in separate areas. The Rabbi talked us through some of his beliefs about Creation before showing us the key features - The Bimah, (a raised stand with a reading desk), The 10 Commandments in Hebrew, the Ner Tamid (everlasting light) and the Ark. (Cupboard for the Torah Scrolls.) Annabelle opened the Ark for us, and we were able to see the real Torah Scrolls together with their decorations. We took many photos, and Oscar and Jack even managed to get the Rabbi to pose with them!
