Y9 DRAX Trips
Fantastic visits to Drax this week - May 12, 13 & 14
Students recently enjoyed an exciting and educational visit to Drax Group, where they learnt how electricity is generated using biomass energy.
The days began with interactive sessions in the Visitor Centre before students explored the power generation process — from sustainable wood pellets sourced in the USA to the production of steam at 560°C, helping generate enough electricity to power around 1.2 million homes.
Students toured key areas of the site, including the huge turbine hall, control room, biomass domes and cooling towers. They also learnt about the many careers involved in operating the power station, including engineering, chemistry, logistics and finance.
After lunch, students took part in a team engineering challenge to design and build paper planes, testing both their creativity and teamwork skills.
The visit was an inspiring opportunity for students to develop their understanding of renewable energy and the careers linked to the energy industry.
