Curriculum

 

The School Day


Our school day consists of 6 x 50 minute lessons (30 lessons per week). We extend the school day each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for students who we think will benefit from working in a small group on a particular topic or unit of work. This provision designed to help our students to stay on target and achieve their potential.

The timing of the school day is:

  • 8.30am – 8.55am: Morning registration and assembly
  • 8.55am – 9.45am: Period 1
  • 9.45am – 10.35am: Period 2
  • 10.35am – 10.50am: Break
  • 10.50am – 11.40am: Period 5
  • 11.40am – 12.30am: Period 4
  • 12.30am – 1.20pm: Lunch
  • 1.20pm – 2.10pm: Period 5
  • 2.10pm – 3.00pm: Period 6
  • 3.00pm – 3.50pm: Period 7

 

KS3 Curriculum


Our Key Stage 3 curriculum meets statutory requirements. Further to these requirements, we offer additional personalised provision and enrichment opportunities ensuring that students of all abilities make good progress. Key Stage 3 personalised provision includes:

  • Early access to core subject GCSE qualifications during year 9 for the most able students
  • Additional Modern Foreign Languages lessons for the most able students
  • Timetabled literacy lessons for students with lower than average literacy levels
  • Enrichment days to develop students’ learning to learn skills
  • Many enrichment activities to develop students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural awareness

KS4 Curriculum


At The Axholme Academy we offer a broad and balanced Key Stage 4 curriculum which is appropriate for students of all abilities. Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is divided into core and optional elements.

Our core subjects are English (WJEC), maths (Edexcel), science (Edexcel BTEC, Core and Additional), ICT (OCR Level 2 ITQ), games, religious studies (AQA) and complementary studies (personal, social, health and economic education; and citizenship).

The optional component consists of 3 pathways which enable students to study subjects matched to their ability, aspirations and interests. During the options process we provide a comprehensive programme information, advice and guidance to ensure that students are fully informed and able to choose wisely. The pathways structure is flexible and students are able to opt between pathways where appropriate.
