Everyone at The Axholme Academy was saddened to hear of the death of Don Cornelius on Christmas Day. Don was Headteacher at the academy (formerly North Axholme School) for over 26 years from January 1967 to July 1993. Mr Cornelius passed away, aged 81 after a distinguished career in education and in the church. He was the third Head at the school following its opening in 1957 and by far the longest serving of only five Heads over 55 years.

It was lovely to see Mr Cornelius attend the 50th Anniversary celebrations of North Axholme in 2008 and enjoy looking back at the history of the school. The academy was represented at the funeral held at St Lawrence Church in Scunthorpe on 8th January by Mr Sellars and Mrs Ellis, one of only two members of staff still at the academy who worked under Mr Cornelius.
