Reception at Normanby Hall for staff & students

40 students and staff were invited to a reception at Normanby Hall by the mayor of North Lincolnshire Cllr Foster to recognise the bravery of a teacher and two teaching assistants at The Axholme Academy who saved a coach full of students from potential disaster during a trip to Alton Towers in July.

English teacher, Carl Thompson and teaching assistants Steph Parkinson and Di Nunns acted quickly to take control of the coach as the driver lost consciousness on the busy M1  near Sheffield. Carl managed to get behind the wheel and steer the coach off the motorway, around a roundabout and to a safe stop without colliding with any other vehicles despite the coach hitting the central reservation.

Principal, Joe Sellars, said 'It was a lovely gesture for the mayor to invite the 3 members of staff and all of the students on that coach to a reception. They really enjoyed the occasion at Normanby Hall, meeting the mayor and Cllrs Briggs and Reid and seeing the three members of staff receive awards for their bravery.'
